Yes, you can bake potatoes without foil paper, microwave or oven.

Ever tried baking or cooking potatoes in sand? If yes then you must be knowing about it’s delicious taste and technique. If you’ve never tried then what are you waiting for? Give this recipe a try!

Let me tell you the speciality of these potatoes firstly it’s different technique of baking/cooking and secondly it has different taste and flavour from oven-baked or microwave-baked.

This is my house help recipe, he even made this recipe for the blog and asked me to mention each and every tips so that everyone get smile on their faces after eating this.

My family love this sand baked potatoes. whenever we get fresh raw peanut, we also cook potatoes with it as it is the perfect evening snacks.

The process of cooking doesn’t take much time if you’re cooking small batch as it hardly takes 18-20 minutes for cooking 250 grams of baby potatoes.

Cooking or baking potatoes in sand is very less popular but you can find it in few states of India which is in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar their are few street vendors who sell these potatoes.

How to bake potatoes

  • Add sand in any old silver kadhai or deep bottom pan, don’t use non-stick pan use only silver kadhai if you’ll use steel or non-stick pan you may end up burning it.
  • So make sure to use silver pan or kadhai.
  • Heat the sand at medium flame for 5-6 minutes then add potatoes in the centre of the kadhai or pan and with the help of turner or spoon or spatula take sand from the side and put in the centre over potatoes so that potatoes are covered with sand.
  • Cover the pan with a lid or plate.
  • After 4-5 minutes remove the lid or plate from kadhai and you may notice that potatoes will leave water i.e, potatoes surface will become little wet as shown in images below.

  • Mix the potatoes well with sand.
  • Now shift all the potatoes to one side then cover all the potatoes with sand. Again cover and cook it for another 4 to 5 minutes.
  • After 5 minutes uncover the potatoes, you may notice that potatoes skin will get wrinkles and it may have small black patches.
  • Carefully take one potato either cut it with knife or smash it with your hand to check whether it’s cooked or not.
  • If the potatoes are not cooked then cover and cook it for another 3-4 minutes.
  • Take out the cooked potatoes with the spoon which has holes in it (karchi) so that all the sand is out from the potatoes.
  • Peel the potatoes and enjoy it with dip or chutney or simply sprinkle some salt and pepper over it.
  • In total it tooked me 18 minutes to cook these baby potatoes.

Top tips

✔️Whenever you’re roasting or cooking anything in sand like peanuts or potatoes always make sure to use old silver kadhai or deep bottom pan as it may burn and turn black due to hot sand.

✔️Firstly let the sand heat and then add the potatoes don’t add the potatoes without heating sand.

✔️Don’t wash the potatoes before adding it in the sand as sand will stick to the potatoes. always add unwashed potatoes before eating peel it and enjoy.

✔️I have used baby potatoes for baking you can even use medium size potatoes. If you’re using medium size potatoes it will take more time to cook.

✔️Please keep your face back from the kadhai/pan while cooking as sometimes potato may pop or while stirring sand may enter your eyes.

✔️To check whether the potatoes are cooked or not carefully take out one potato slice it with the knife or crush it with your hand. If the potatoes are not cooked then cover and cook it for another 4 to 5 minutes.

How to bake potatoes in sand

Try this technique to bake potatoes with sand and enjoy its different taste and flavour. It is the perfect snacks and goes well with everything.

Ingredients

  • 250 gram baby potatoes

Instructions

    1. Add 2 to 3 cups sand in any old silver kadhai or deep bottom pan, don’t use non-stick pan use only silver kadhai if you’ll use steel or non-stick pan you may end up burning it.
    2. Heat the sand at medium flame for 5-6 minutes then add 250 grams baby potatoes in the centre of the kadhai or pan and with the help of spoon or spatula take sand from the side and put in the centre over potatoes so that potatoes are covered with sand.
